National Assembly to Cooperate with UN on Human Rights

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s National Assembly President met with the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Representative to Cambodia to reaffirm Cambodia’s commitment to improving human rights.

On January 17, National Assembly President Khuon Sodary met with OHCHR Representative Roueida El Hage to discuss the progress of human rights in Cambodia.

National Assembly Cabinet head Keo Piseth reported on the meeting and detailed the important role that the OHCHR has played in Cambodia since 1993. He said that Khuon Sodary praised the OHCHR for promoting human rights in Cambodia and noted that Cambodia signs an agreement with the office every two years.

The President of the National Assembly said that Cambodia has granted and promoted human rights especially when it comes to the right to life, freedom of religion, equality before the law, and women and children’s rights. She noted that Cambodia has its own Human Rights Committee in addition to a human rights committee within the Cambodian National Assembly.

According to the report, Representative El Hage praised the Cambodian government for its efforts to improve human rights in the country and said that the OHCHR supports the government in promoting human rights. She said that the OHCHR supports Cambodia’s sovereignty and its right to pass and enforce laws as it sees fit. She said her organization exists to advise, provide support , and act as a partner, not to teach and tell Cambodia what to do.

The UN representative stated that Cambodia is playing an important role in human rights and gave examples related to child protection, children's rights, women's rights, and LGBT rights which provide social protection. She said that the OHCHR is ready to support and provide input, recommendations and analysis into the passage of laws.

President Khuon Sodary said she was ready to cooperate in promoting human rights in Cambodia to be better than ever.

Both sides agreed that the OHCHR plays an important role as a partner in promoting and enforcing the law, while the National Assembly does its part to monitor the implementation of the law.
